Dentists are charged with evaluating the overall health of their patients while advising them about oral health and disease prevention. In a standard visit, dentists are looking to identify, diagnose, and treat oral conditions of their patients. They perform various clinical procedures, such as exams, fillings, crowns, implants, extractions, and corrective surgeries.
Once you complete four years of dental school, you will be trained to enter the profession of dentistry as a general dentist. After graduation from dental school, you can either begin practicing as a general dentist in a number of practice settings or you can go on to explore one of nine dental specialties: Dental Anesthesiology, Endondontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, and Prosthodontics.
